Defenders and Discoverys fitted with Td5 engines and manual transmissions have a dual mass flywheel, intended to dampen engine vibrations and soften take up when engaging the clutch.

A dual mass flywheel is a 2-piece flywheel with a degree of flex between the section bolted to the crankshaft and the section that the clutch bites on. Replacement is often required at the same time as the clutch needs changing, however aggressive off-road driving with larger tyres or tuned engines can cause premature dual mass flywheel and clutch failure.

Symptoms of failure are excessive vibration and heavy rattling noise and clutch slipping. Replacing the dual mass flywheel with a solid flywheel is a more economical swap and a much more reliable alternative for off-road use and towing. It is recommended that a heavy-duty clutch is also fitted to cope with the increase in shock load when engaging the clutch.
